Cape & Islands - February School Vacation Week!

For most Cape Cod schools, traditionally starting with Presidents day, February 16th through the 22nd is February School Vacation week! Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket public school students will enjoy winter recess the following week. Cape Cod offers lots to do in the winter, both in and outdoors, for Cape Cod kids, as well as visiting families and grandchildren.

Those looking for conventional winter weather fun are in luck again this year! MBF on skis January 26th's highly anticipated blizzard Juno did not disappoint! Add to that more snow from subsequent storms and the Cape will be blanketed with snow for at least another several days... Golf courses are excellent places to sled, snow shoe or cross country ski! Check out EMS on Route 132 in Hyannis to rent equipment. sledding at the courthouse It is usually not safe to be on the ice outdoors, but ice skating, a popular winter sport, can be enjoyed indoors during public skating times at Cape Cod skating rinks.

snowmanBuild a snowman. Bake some heart healthy oatmeal cookies to serve with hot chocolate after a day in the snow. Pop some popcorn, the old-fashioned way, with oil in a covered pan on the stove! Finally, turn off the TV and Xbox, and have a family game night- old favorites include Candyland, Trouble, Battling Tops, Monopoly, Yahtzee, Scrabble...

Nature centers and museums have scheduled many special activities (indoors and outside) during vacation week. Offering kid friendly nature programs year round in East Sandwich, Green Briar Nature Center has added several additional programs for families and school aged children - Michael with Brown Bunny learn about seals, birds, animal tracks, the weather and more! The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History opens the 2015 school vacation week with the return of "Ambassador Wolf", a Habitat Hunt, "The Incredible NEW Inflatable Gray Whale!" and much more... The museum is open daily all week long. The Cape Cod Children's Museum has added several programs to their regular weekly schedule; don't miss the Mardi Gras Dance Party with DJ Devon Crowl on Tuesday and Cape Cod African Dance & Drum's demonstration on Friday! Open year round, the Cape Cod National Seashore's Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham offers something for everyone (completely free of charge!) - short hiking trails, a comprehensive museum, and an indoor theater showing 5 short films daily on a rotating schedule.

"Check out" the library for free events -story hours, concerts, lectures, arts & crafts, and more -take home videos, games, and good books. Go Bowling! Go to the movies or take in a show! Eventide Arts presents "Honk! the Musical", a musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling story, at Gertrude Lawrence Stage, Historic Dennis Union Church. The Amazing Richard Harwich Jr Theatre is presenting special vacation week matinee performances of "Ramona Quimby", by Len Jenkins based on the Newbery Medal-winning books by Beverly Clearly. Winter is a time for magic! Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater presents The Magic of Rich Archer with Ab The Magic Rabbit- featuring The Houdini Escape Trunk, Floating Kid, and Magical Snow Storm on Monday. The Amazing Richard is also entertaining at the Sturgis Library on Wednesday! The Cultural Center of Cape Cod presents "Marcus the Magician" on Thursday.
