Cape & Islands - Memorial Day 2025 - Get Ready for the Summer!
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is also a day that we remember our own deceased relatives and friends. Memorial Day weekend has come to be the (un)official
start of the summer season on Cape Cod and the Islands.
For a history of Memorial Day visit
the US Memorial Day website. Cape Cod Cares For The Troops will sponsor its 21st annual 24 hour "Troops in the Spotlight" observance beginning at 11:30AM on Sunday May 25 behind the Cape Cod Mall on Route 28 in Hyannis. Traditional Memorial Day events include parades and ceremonies in several towns and villages - please check with local town halls/chambers for information.
The Figawi Race, now in its 54th year, is a well known sailing event between Hyannis and Nantucket, held annually on Memorial Day weekend. The race normally includes over 200 vessels with sailors from several states, to kick off the summer boating season.
In most towns, Memorial Day weekend officially opens the beaches for the season. Please be familiar with the rules, and get a beach sticker if you plan to spend the weekend in the sun, salt, and surf!
Now starts the season of free outdoor concerts, drive-in movies, back yard barbecues, lobster & fried clams, lawn flamingos, straw handbags, white jeans, flip flops, soggy beach towels, sandy floors, non-stop company, and the need to make reservations before going out to dine on Cape Cod!
Cape Cod has so much to offer! See our calendar for summer events... then plan a day trip, long weekend, or better yet a weeklong vacation! Looking for a place to stay this summer, visit our Cape Cod Lodging Directory.
